Citizen — more than 100 years of innovation on the wrist

Founded in Japan in 1918 with the aspiration to create watches loved by all people, Citizen has grown into one of the world's most respected watchmakers — a brand that combines precision engineering, pioneering technology, and a deep commitment to making timekeeping better for everyone.

"Better Starts Now" Citizen's guiding philosophy since 1918 — the belief that no matter who you are or where you are, it is always possible to improve something, and the time to start is right now.

A true manufacture with over a century of craft

Citizen is what the watch world calls a true manufacture — a company that handles the entire watchmaking process in-house, from crafting individual components to final assembly. This level of vertical integration is rare, and it gives Citizen complete control over quality, precision, and innovation at every step.

The brand's name was chosen deliberately: the founders wanted to create a watch that would be loved by the citizens of the world for a long time. That intention has guided Citizen ever since, resulting in a global presence spanning more than 140 countries and a legacy of industry firsts that few brands can match.

Innovations that changed watchmaking forever

Citizen has a remarkable record of industry firsts. Rather than following trends, the brand has consistently asked what a watch could do better — and then built the technology to make it happen.

Eco-Drive

Citizen's most iconic technology, launched in 1976, converts any light into energy to power the watch. Eliminates routine battery replacements with rechargeable cells that last 10-20 years. The latest Eco-Drive 365 runs a full year on a single charge, even in complete darkness.

Satellite Wave GPS

Receives signals from GPS satellites orbiting in space to automatically adjust the time and date — accurate to within one second, anywhere on Earth. Perfect for frequent travellers.

Radio-Controlled

Syncs with atomic clock transmitters to keep time with an accuracy of one second per 100,000 years. Citizen was among the first to combine this with Eco-Drive technology.

Super Titanium

Citizen was the first watchmaker to produce a fully titanium-cased watch in 1970. Their proprietary Super Titanium is five times harder than standard steel, yet featherlight and hypoallergenic.

Innovation with the future in mind

Sustainability is not a recent addition to Citizen's identity — it is woven into the brand's DNA. Eco-Drive alone has kept hundreds of millions of disposable batteries out of landfills since 1976. Today Citizen continues to expand its environmental commitments, from using certified sustainable materials to supporting global initiatives that bring light and energy access to communities in need.
